Alex Sibandas Monkey Planter is inspired by the iconic Wonderboy Wisdom fabric, relaunched as part of the 2026 Qalakabusha collection. The work pays tribute to the late Wonderboy Nxumalo, renowned poet, storyteller, historian, and artist, whose legacy continues to resonate deeply within Ardmore.
Sibanda playfully renders the monkeys face in a two-dimensional relief on the planter, acknowledging Wonderboys strength as a 2D artist. Wonderboys words of wisdom, centred on living a safe, healthy, and love-filled life, feel especially relevant in todays turbulent world, offering guidance and quiet hope.
This piece also marks the first assignment for Mbali Gumede, who joined Ardmore in January 2026. Drawing from Wonderboys motifs and messages, she has thoughtfully embellished the sculpture, bringing her own voice to the work while honouring his enduring legacy.
